Penn Badgley Revealed His Favorite You Memes

“I think the one that made me laugh out loud was…”

Even Penn Badgley understands the importance of making time in your schedule for memes. The actor might have a pretty busy schedule, what with a third season of You already planned for next year, but as he revealed in a new interview, there’s always time for memes.

Speaking with InStyle, Penn admitted that yes, he is very aware of your You memes, and he even has a favorite. “I think the one that made me laugh out loud was the one where I’ve been given nails and hoop earrings,” he said. “And there was a tweet with that meme that has been used so many times [‘distracted boyfriend’], for so many different purposes to varying effect, and the picture finally had no text on it. The simplicity of that one was very funny to me.”

The former Gossip Girl star also admitted that, just like the internet, he is puzzled by Joe’s thinking that a baseball cap is enough of a disguise. As viewers of You know, Joe is frequently lurking, and somehow, despite only wearing a baseball cap, he’s never spotted. “Trust me, as an actor, I find it very challenging to sometimes suspend my disbelief when you’re forced into a position that is just in the literal sense of the word incredible,” he said of the cap’s apparent magical powers. “That’s the interesting thing about this show — it works.”

Fans will have to wait and see whether Joe gets a new wardrobe in the upcoming third season, but in the meantime, there’s plenty of You–centric goodness on the internet to enjoy. In addition to those memes about Joe’s willingness to dig up dirt, fans had previously pointed out that it’s nearly impossible to watch the series without thinking of one of Penn’s other characters — Dan Humphrey from Gossip Girl.

Speaking with InStyle, Penn did note that he’s very aware that his acting resumé contains a lot of roles as a lurker. “I think I just happened to have found myself in projects like that — it hasn’t been conscious,” he said. “When I first read the pilot script for You, I definitely saw the similarities. I think I was really caught between being able to appreciate how that’s an interesting progression of things for me, but also how it’s not. We pulled off this somewhat remote possibility of the show doing just what it’s done. I feel like the fact that I’m the person helps it be just that thing, because I was Gossip Girl.”

XOXO, he does have a point.
