Pedro Pascal Should Win An Award For This "The Last Of Us" Scene, So Here's What Happened While Filming It

There are obviously MASSIVE spoilers ahead for The Last of Us Episode 6!

Welp, another week, another emotionally devastating episode of The Last of Us, am I right?

In Episode 6, titled "Kin," Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) finally make it to Jackson and reunite with Tommy (Gabriel Luna), and it's an hour of TV filled to the brim with beautiful acting, especially from Pedro.

Not only did the series bring to life a beloved and important Joel and Ellie moment from the video games word-for-word, but the episode explored Joel's heartache, trauma, and fear in a way the game rarely did.

In particular, there's a moment in Episode 6 where Joel opens up to Tommy about his journey with Ellie and why he's desperately afraid to lose her like Sarah.

And in the end, Joel ultimately asks Tommy to take Ellie to the Fireflies' base in Colorado.

It's a brilliantly acted scene between Pedro and Gabriel, so much so that fans on Twitter are saying that this is the scene that Pedro should win an Emmy Award for.

Speaking about bringing this important brother moment to life, director Jasmila Žbanić told Variety that the scene came together with equal parts collaboration between herself, Pedro, Gabriel, and writer/showrunner Craig Mazin.

"We were very lucky because we had the opportunity to have rehearsals before we were on the set. The set was quite difficult because of the cold weather. Sometimes it was even -15 degrees Celsius [5 degrees Fahrenheit], so very, very cold. That scene with Tommy and Joel was especially taken care of," Jasmila told Variety.

She continued, saying, "[Pedro and Gabriel] would be reading it, act, repeat, and trying different stuff. They also suggested some changes, so it was very deep for both of them in each scene. It was so beautiful, because it’s a very long scene in the shoe shop."

The shoe shop scene is arguably one of the best of the episode, and Jasmila said you could feel how special it was while filming.

"It's a very emotional scene for Pedro. I was filming him as a second; first we filmed Gabriel, and then I noticed that each time we repeated, Pedro was crying," she recalled.

Jasmila continued, saying, "He was not on camera, but he was crying because he was giving his partner everything so that he can act. This is very special. It's so generous of an actor to do this so deep. I was amazed by Pedro's talent."

Alongside the shoe shop scene, Joel and Tommy also have another important moment together in a bar, where Tommy reveals to Joel that Maria (Rutina Wesley) is pregnant.

This is another pivotal and beautifully acted scene where Pedro and Gabriel really worked hand-in-hand to make it great.

Speaking about reworking the moment with Pedro, Gabriel told Entertainment Weekly that he and Pedro were brought to a small town in Calgary a day before filming to rehearse the barroom scene moment, and that's when they reworked the scene together.

"In that session, Pedro and I completely rewrote the scene. We didn't change a single letter. We just restructured the way that this scene unfolds," Gabriel recalled to EW.

He continued, saying, "Craig being the mensch and the incredible artist that he is, he was like, 'This is better.' It made it feel right in terms of the way we hit each of these beats: how I eventually build the courage to stand up to [Joel] and tell him the truth and tell him what is an extremely joyful thing for me but potentially a very hurtful thing for him to hear, that I was gonna be a father."

Gabriel continued, saying, "That was pretty much the only scene on the slate that whole day. It was just Pedro and I being brothers and doing what brothers do: laughing, joking, needling each other, and eventually fighting."

I really do think that this episode showcased Pedro's amazing and nuanced acting as Joel in a way that we haven't seen yet on the show. I can't wait to see what he does the rest of the season. You know, after he (hopefully) wakes up following being stabbed.
