Pedestrian bridge in southwest Detroit filled with hundreds of love locks

Southwest Detroit's Bagley Pedestrian Bridge is filled with hundreds of "love locks," telling the love stories of Detroit's couples through engraved and decorated padlocks.

The tradition of love locks dates to a 1914 Serbian love story, of a young couple separated by war who continued to place locks on the Bridge of Love in Vrnjačka Banja until they were reunited. The bridge remains untouched today as the town holds great importance in maintaining the romantic tradition.

Modern-day love lock-filled bridges can be found in urban cities across Europe, Asia, and Russia, with one of the most notable, the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris, France which collapsed under the weight of its padlocks in 2015.

Thankfully, there have been no reports of anyone throwing keys onto the I-96 and I-75 expressways underneath the Bagley Pedestrian Bridge. The pedestrian bridge, built in 2010 is monitored by 24/7 camera surveillance and employees of the nearby Detroit Welcome Center said they've had no complaints.
