Peak termite season is here in Louisiana. Experts talk about what homeowners can do

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Experts talk about what people can do to protect their homes as termite season arrives in Baton Rouge.

Adam Howington, owner of Parish Pest Control, said his business has been booked and busy with back-to-back appointments for termite issues. He said he’s been to three houses where Formosan termites have been found this past week.

He said homes are either termite magnets or not, and certain items attract them.

“Moisture issues that are against the house, maybe a leaky faucet. It’s attractive for termites because all they really need is wood, water and shelter and they’re ready to roll,” said Howington.

Howington said the two main house types in southeast Louisiana are slab foundations and pier and beam houses. He emphasized the importance of termite precaution with these types of homes and suggested homeowners find a reputable company to implement a good treatment plan.

Southern University entomologist Veronica Manrique said termites are hard to avoid in Louisiana, especially because of the weather.

“That is the main problem that we have in urban landscapes, in particular in Louisiana, because termites, a lot of the species, of course, they like warm and humid climates. So we are in the perfect place for termites to live on,” Manrique said.

Manrique advises people to stay on the lookout for termites and if you’re unsure about the insect that may be infesting your home, you can always reach out to Southern University for help.
