Have Peace of Mind When You Hit the Run With These Safety Products

When hitting the road, runners have to contest with a host of safety concerns — from distracted drivers to wildlife and weather. But for women, who are more likely to be harassed and targeted while running alone, human predators spark the biggest fear.

Earlier this month, Eliza Fletcher, a teacher and mom of two from Memphis, was abducted and murdered by a man while on her early-morning run. The tragic events have renewed conversations on the rampant harassment of female runners — and how they can stay safe while on the run.

According to a 2021 survey of 2,000 female-identifying runners conducted by Runner’s World UK, a remarkable 60% reported harassment while running, and 25% reported regularly being harassed while running. What’s more, 6% of respondents said they have felt so threatened while running that they feared for their lives.

Women should never feel unsafe while running, walking, or hiking alone (or, you know, while going about life in general!). But until we address the many societal issues that put women’s lives at risk, these runner’s safety products — from alarms to IDs and reflective gear — can provide an additional layer of support.
