The PBS Holiday Lineup Has Been Announced and We Can't Wait To Tune In
We eagerly await news of the PBS holiday lineup every year, and this season, we can’t wait to tune in. PBS never fails to bring us joyful programming, and its plans for the holidays are no different. According to a press release, “PBS is decorating its holiday schedule with traditional fare [including] Christmas at Belmont, yearly fan favorite Call the Midwife Holiday Special, and an entire month of Great Performances dedicated to ‘Broadway’s Best.’” And that’s just the beginning.
It all begins on November 16 with a festive, nostalgic celebration of the classics. PBS plans to “bring holiday joy, cheer and happiness to old and young alike beginning Saturday, November 16, with the premiere of A Classic Christmas.” This holiday special will see "Gavin MacLeod (“The Love Boat”) and Marion Ross (“Happy Days”) host a festive, all-star special of favorite carols and popular standards. Featured holiday performances from yesteryear include Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, The Carpenters and many more.”
Next on the lineup is a series of Broadway’s best performances, including 42nd Street and The King and I, and a whole host of children’s programming the whole family will love. Then, on Monday, December 16, PBS will air a fun musical special featuring Kristin Chenoweth and The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
PBS takes things down to Nashville in the days leading up to Christmas. On Monday, December 23, and Tuesday, December 24, there will be a holiday musical spectacular called Christmas at Belmont, a program that will feature student musicians, the Belmont School of Music faculty, and Nashville Children’s Choir.
On Christmas Day, fans can tune into the annual Call the Midwife Holiday Special, which is set to air from 9-10:30 pm ET. It’s always a must-see visit with the nuns and nurses at Nonnatus House.
Things don’t end there. A whole host of New Year’s programming follows, with a Live from Lincoln Center celebration of the songs of Steven Sondheim featuring the New York Philharmonic and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Katrina Lenk happening on New Year’s Eve. In addition, Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville hosts a concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Andris Nelsons and featuring the Vienna City Ballet, on New Year’s Day.
