If you're in the market for a low-maintenance houseplant, you have a couple options. You can head to your local garden store, look through what's available, ask a lot of questions about light needs, feeding, watering, and care, and then look for a self-watering planter—possibly at a different store—that's the right size and also looks nice. Then you can take them both home and repot the plant yourself before putting it in your house. Don't forget the potting soil.

Or you can buy an easyplant.

easyplant—the company spells their name without capitals—has quickly become one of the most popular online sources of houseplants since it was founded in 2021. It's done so by providing plants that are, well, easy, in beautiful pots that come in neutral, eye-pleasing colors.

But how easy are easyplants? Are their plants really as good as they seem? And can you actually get a high-quality plant delivered through the mail undamaged?

To find out, I went ahead and ordered a few of their plants online—including a small rattlesnake Calathea, a medium-size ponytail palm, and large(ish) money tree.

I attended to them for several weeks, checking water levels and plant care as directed by easyplant's guides (instead of our own—more on that later).

I also spoke with several people who had been caring for easyplants—in one case for several years. Then I spoke with Einav Dinur, easyplant's head of marketing, about the company's history and a little about their plans for the future.

Buying an easyplant

easyplant graciously offered to send me whichever plants I wanted, though I still made a point of using their site to browse and select the plants to get a sense of how complicated it is. (Note: The sample plants provided did not affect my decision to write this article, nor did they influence my evaluation of the plants. No one at easyplant saw this review before it was published.)

The site is, with one caveat, pretty easy to use, and browsing is relatively straightforward. I wanted to try several plants of different sizes, and I ended up selecting the "Luscious Trinity"collection (which is, at the time of this writing, not currently available), in large part because it was noted as pet-friendly—meaning that none of the plants contain calcium oxalate crystals or other things that would be toxic to my cat.

Browsing both individual plants and collections is very easy, and selecting plants and pot color is also easy.

One big drawback: It's not easy to search for a particular kind of plant. If you're in the market for, say, a philodendron, you'll simply have to scroll around and see if one is available.

Unboxing easyplants

The easyplants were impressively boxed. All three plants arrived in very good condition in boxes that were smartly designed to support the plants as well as the pots.

The smaller pots, which are made of ceramic, were bubble-wrapped. Larger pots, which are made of a lighter, sturdy bamboo melamine, aren't prone to breaking. All the plants came shrink-wrapped, with wet towels holding the dirt in place. They were simple to open with practically no mess whatsoever. For first-time plant owners who are concerned about mess, this is definitely an advantage.

How Often Do easyplants Need to be Watered?

easyplant has a smart reservoir watering system so that you don't have to water your plant regularly. They didn't invent this; many kinds of self-watering planters are available for sale. But easyplants are both aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. They claim that the pots only need to be filled once a month.

When I spoke to Einav about this, she noted that is an estimate. "Actually, you know, we say that you only need to water once a month, but often I have easyplants at home, and some of them I don't need to water for five or six or even sometimes seven weeks."

I filled the reservoir of each plant fully when I got it, and then checked each one a week later. Two of the plants had very low levels of water—which isn't too surprising considering that they ship empty. I refilled both and then checked again one week after that. The reservoirs seem to be where they should be—at least three-fourths full.

Are easyplants Easy to Care For?

easyplant really strives to make their plants seem as easy to care for as possible—even keeping the care guides that come with the plants to no more than two pages. (Their online care guides are a little more in-depth.)

However, as anyone whose struggled with a fussy ficus knows, plants can sometimes be testy. They droop or drop leaves or develop spots, and it's hard to know the reason. That's why we provide plant guides for the most popular houseplants!

One case in point: When I received the rattlesnake Calathea, easyplant's guide offered a little illustration that suggested direct or indirect sunlight was recommended. So, I placed it by a south-facing window, as you can see above.

After a couple weeks, I noticed brown spots tingeing the leaves. I checked our own guide on caring for calathea and noted two issues: Direct light can cause both fading and sometimes burning, and Calathea also is sensitive to fluoride in water. (easyplant does not specify what kind of water to use.)

I moved mine to a bookshelf near another window where it will get more indirect light. I also replaced the water with filtered water, which I'll use from now on.

Einav also mentioned that customers can always call their plant care experts to troubleshoot problems. (easyplant offers a 90-day replacement guarantee and will replace any plant that arrives damaged or dies in that time.)

How Long do easyplants Last?

Because easyplant has only been around for about 2 1/2 to 3 years, the company hasn't had to deal with long-term plant issues with their customers. When I asked Einav how long I should expect the plants to last, she told me, "The easyplant system is supposed to work forever, basically."

Obviously no plant lasts forever. But these are high-quality plants that, in my estimation, should last for years with proper care. One person I spoke with has been caring for an easyplant since 2021, and it's very healthy and, in fact, larger than ever. It's so large that she will need to repot it soon. Which leads to the next question:

Can You Repot an easyplant?

When my easyplants outgrow their current pots, I could, of course, repot them into larger vessels. I could even buy bigger self-watering pots and repot them there. But I couldn't repot them into easyplant pots—right now the company does not sell empty pots.

When I asked Einav about the plants outgrowing their pots, she noted it's a concern that they're in the process of addressing. "We do realize that some of the plants are thriving and actually are outgrowing their pots," she told me. "And we are working on solutions that would allow people to move them over to a bigger pot in a way that allows people to keep using the easyplant system. But it's not out yet. And I'm afraid I can't say more than that right now."

Should You Buy an easyplant?

The decision to buy an easyplant comes down to how much you value convenience over cost.

The three plants I received would have cost $304, including shipping. Had I bought those three plants at my local plant store, they would have set me back $62.

That price doesn't include the self-watering pots, of course (or the two wooden stands that also came with the package). However, I'm confident I could find three pots and two stands for less than $242.

A large part of what you're paying for is both the convenience and assurance that easyplant provides, as well as the stylishness of their pots. I've spent a not-small amount of time browsing self-watering pots, and there are few that look as nice as easyplant's.

If you want to shop their collections, you can find them online right here.
