Paulina Porizkova isn’t afraid to get vulnerable and unfiltered—in fact, she prefers it, especially in the form of Instagram posts. In her latest, the former supermodel poses nude with a blanket wrapped around her, using the raw shot as an opportunity to celebrate her body—something she says women are often discouraged from doing. But why?
“Is it objectification or celebration? A little weekend food for thought…” the 57-year-old wrote. “In a patriarchal [sic] society, women have always been seen as objects of desire or nurture. Because these are the needs of men who run the world. This is why youth and beauty are such a strong currency. What happens when a woman decides to objectify herself?”
She went on to explain how, in her opinion, a woman’s self-indulgence can often be a lose-lose situation. “She is taking the powers she has been given and using them in her own interest but is simultaneously helping to perpetuate a system which has always existed,” she wrote, referring to one that prioritizes looks and beauty.
In her modeling days, Porizkova’s youth and conventionally attractive looks were the star of dozens of beauty campaigns. Like many models, she was objectified. But now, she has more of a sense of autonomy, which she finds empowering.
“When I was a young model exposing my body, it was because someone else approved of it. Someone else decided it was to be celebrated,” she explained. “I didn’t know enough to have an understanding of consequences. Hence, objectification. Now, when I expose my body, it it with my full knowledge and consent. Hence, celebration.”
Fans and followers were inspired by the actress’ commentary. “Keep celebrating! 🙌🙌” one person commented. “Yep love the ending of this thought …and U you from top to tips of your toes ❤️❤️❤️❤️,” another added. “So well said- and what a beautiful, strong bodyyyyyy (and mind of course!) ❤️,” someone else wrote.
The photo appears to be from the same shoot during which Porizkova snapped another topless, un-retouched shot, which she shared in June. Beneath it, she discussed comparing herself to other women her age.
“Did you know we are programmed, as humans, to compare ourselves to others? We can’t avoid comparing,” she wrote. “But we can control our reactions to the comparisons.”
