Paul McCartney, John Lennon

Paul McCartney remembered his late bandmate, John Lennon, on what would have been his 83rd birthday in a sweet tribute online.

On Monday, Oct. 9, McCartney shared a photo of himself performing to a crowd with a blown-up image of the late Beatles icon projected onto a screen behind him.

Alongside the sweet snap uploaded to the 81-year-old's Instagram grid, the English singer-songwriter shared a sentimental message in the caption, "Celebrating the birthday of my wonderful friend and collaborator, @johnlennon," he wrote before signing his name with a black heart emoji, "Paul 🖤."

The comments soon filled up with notes from fans who wished the late musician a happy birthday and declared their love for the duo alongside gifs of the young songwriters.

"The best duo in history," one comment translated from Spanish read. "Happy birthday johncito."

Another suggested that McCartney and Lennon were the "Best partnership in the history of music."

"A match that defied anyone's dreams!!" a third gushed. "Magic!"

"happy bday, eternal John 🫶🏻," someone else wrote.

Lennon, a peace activist, died 43 years ago this coming winter after being shot outside his Manhattan apartment on Dec. 8, 1980. He was only 40 years old at the time. He left behind his wife, Yoko Ono, now 90, two young sons, Julian Lennon, now 60, and Sean Lennon, 48, as well as countless fans across the globe.

His killer, Mark David Chapman, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for his murder, which occurred hours after Lennon had reportedly autographed an album for him. In the four decades since, Chapman has been denied parole on multiple instances, most recently, for the 12th time in the fall of last year. Chapman's next opportunity for parole is scheduled for February 2024, The Associated Press reported.
