Patrick Schwarzenegger has been open about his body transformation journey over the last year as he gets in shape for a role, sharing clips of his workouts with celebrity trainer Ben Bruno, showing off the visible changes to his physique, and encouraging his fans to join him in exercising at the crack of dawn with the "5 a.m. challenge" on Instagram.

The 28-year-old actor has just offered up a little bit more detail about what his morning routine looks like, and how he jump-starts his system for those training sessions. Turns out, Schwarzenegger is a big fan of thermal exposure; in a new Instagram video, he revealed that each morning he spends time in both a sauna and an ice bath, plunging his body from temperatures of 144 degrees Fahrenheit to 44 Fahrenheit in a matter of seconds.

"Sauna to ice bath," he wrote in the caption. Game changer."

While a cup of coffee or a glass of juice might be a lot of people's go-to way of waking themselves up in the morning, Schwarzenegger isn't alone in this shock-to-the-system approach. Surfing legend Laird Hamilton is also a proponent of taking the body to extreme temperatures.

"It’s like a warm-up," Hamilton told Men's Health. "I'll go out in the morning in the dark and sauna to start the day, a really hot one. I’ll do something really hot, or you could also just jump in an ice tub and get the opposite of that. Either one of those kind of extreme thermal exposures is gonna boost the system. It's gonna rev you up. I would take a cold shower, but the problem is most people’s showers don’t get cold enough. But the heat gives you a good kick."

Ice baths have become an increasingly popular muscle recovery method thanks to "Ice Man" Wim Hof, with celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Liam Hemsworth trying out the freezing cold technique. Hof's philosophy is even the basis of a new reality show on the BBC, Freeze the Fear with Wim Hof, which features all kinds of physical and mental endurance challenges.
