Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a crack about his teammate Travis Kelce getting up there in years, just weeks after the 34-year-old's brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, announced his retirement.

Mahomes, 28, made the dig while accepting the Derrick Thomas Award on Friday. The award is presented annually to the Chiefs' most valuable player at the NFL's 101 Awards, which honors the best players and coaches from the past year. During the news conference, Mahomes was asked about the Chiefs signing wide receiver Marquise Brown, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals.

"I'll tell you, I've been impressed by how hungry he's been. You can tell he wants it, he wants to win," Mahomes said of his new teammate. "Obviously, he wants to do good and everybody wants to do good. But you can tell he wants to be a part of something that’s special, part of greatness."

"We’re trying to build that here and we believe that we’ve started it and we want to continue it. We still have a young team—other than Trav, he quipped of the Chiefs center, who is six years his senior. "And so if we can continue to build this with a lot of people who are hungry and wanna win, we can keep this thing going."

Kelce is the second-oldest currently active Chiefs player after James Winchester, who was born in August 1989, just two months before the Ohio native.

Though most NFL players are generally considered "old" after crossing 30, there have been a number who have played through their 30s and even into their 40s, with Tom Brady being one of the oldest player ever when he retired at 45. But if Kelce follows his brother's trajectory, who was 36 when he made the difficult decision to step down from the Eagles, he's got at least another good two years left in him.
