Derek Shepherd may have walked off at the end of last Thursday night's Grey's Anatomy season 17 episode. But that doesn't necessarily mean actor Patrick Dempsey is gone from the ABC series forever.

Last week, fans got choked up watching Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) choose to leave her dream beach with Derek and return to life with her family and the rest of the Grey's team. Despite wanting to stay with her late husband, Derek, who died after getting in a car crash, convinced her to wake up.

"It's not your time yet. Our kids need you," Derek told her. "You have to go." And with that, we see Meredith slowly wake up in her hospital bed and embrace the couple's daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs). The episode ends with Derek alone on the beach smiling and walking off into the distance.

Reflecting on the emotional episode, which also featured Meredith and Derek getting married on the beach, Patrick made it clear to Variety that he liked the way the dream sequence concluded.

"I thought it was a beautiful way to close it," Patrick said. "The intention was to really give people some hope because they are such an iconic couple. We’ve lost so many people this year, the thought that we’d have angels hovering around us taking care of us is a good message to send out in such a bleak world that we’re living in."

Patrick continued: "So for all of us, it was a beautiful ending to this story. I’m so grateful that I did it and happy that the fans really loved it."

But while it may seem like this was McDreamy's final bow, Patrick didn't totally shut down the possibility of another cameo in future episodes. Despite leaving the show in April of 2015 after portraying Derek for 11 years, it sounds like the actor is leaving the door open for more.

"Who knows? Never say never with this show, right?" he began. "I’m glad we did it this year. And [showrunner] Krista Vernoff did a fantastic job telling the story. It was just a great way to give people some hope."

Here's to more hope that McDreamy will appear again!
