Patrick Dempsey is probably best known for two things: playing Dr. Derek Shepherd, a.k.a. Dr. McDreamy, on the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and his thick head of hair. The actor has been rocking a salt and pepper look for some time now, but he has just mixed things up in a major way.

Dempsey—an accomplished race car driver in his own right—recently dyed his hair platinum blonde in order to play real-life racer Piero Taruffi in the upcoming motorsports movie Ferrari opposite Adam Driver. "It's fun to do something different," he said at the time. "Unfortunately, or fortunately, I'm known for my hair. So, this has really jacked up a lot of people, they don't know how to embrace it. Either they love it or they hate it."

After filming wrapped, Dempsey and his wife Jillian, a hairstylist and makeup artist, tried dying it back to his natural brunette. But the overall effect wasn't quite what they wanted, and the repeated coloring left his roots with some damage, so they decided to shave it all off and start from scratch.

"Patrick recently dyed his hair platinum for a project, and even though he colored his hair back, it wasn't the same natural 'salt-and-pepper' color that we all know and love," Jillian told People. "In order to let his color grow back naturally, we needed to give him a fresh and short start."

The Disenchanted star recorded the moment that he trimmed his locks into a buzzcut, and Jillian shared it as an Instagram Reel video which might send some viewers right back to the days in 2020 when a lot of us were giving ourselves DIY at-home haircuts with clippers. After he was finished trimming his entire scalp, Jillian was then on hand with some Roadie product to give the new 'do some much-needed styling.
