Patchwork and Embroidery Decorate Levi’s New Made in Japan Collection

Premium selvedge denim sourced from the renowned Japanese Kaihara Denim is the base of Levi’s new Made in Japan collection.

The men’s and women’s collection spans jeans, jackets and shorts, and each garment includes collection-exclusive details like the Made in Japan backpatch, inner label inspired by the Hinomaru (the flag of Japan), and an indigo tab.

The Hiroshima-based mill, which was recently used by Madewell for a women’s capsule collection, is known for impeccable attention to detail and dedication to tradition, including the use of vintage shuttle looms.

Designs in Levi’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection highlight the fabric’s shades of indigo achieved by the mill’s unique in-house rope dyeing technique.

A Made in Japan Classic Type II jacket for women and the Made in Japan Classic Type III for men are artfully crafted with a moody and dark rinse. The woman’s jacket Type II is also available with pastel-colored geometric shape embroidery. The motif is repeated on the women’s Made in Japan Column jeans. A men’s Utility Trucker comes in a clean, light rinse.

Men’s fits span the Made in Japan 1980s 501 jeans, the 505 Regular Fit, the 511, the 512, and the 502. The Made in Japan 1980s 501 boasts the “Atlas,” a special patchwork of contrasting denim fabric that mimics the look of a map.

Women’s bottoms span the Column jean, High Rise Boyfriend, Barrel, and High Rise Slim.

“With our bespoke Japanese denim as the foundation, the 2024 Spring/Summer Made in Japan collection is brought to life with colored embroidery and a unique approach to patch and repair,” said Paul O’Neill, Levi Strauss & Co. design director. “Featuring a range of simple as well as intricate finishes, the collection builds on Japanese craftsmanship to offer elevated pieces with a modern edge.”

Levi’s also partnered with SAAB, a Japanese sewing and finishing company, to cut, sew, and hand finish each piece from the collection.

The Made in Japan collection is available now on Levi’s website, app and in select stores.
