Pat McGrath Labs Is Launching an Entire Skin Fetish Makeup Collection
Pat McGrath has launched some truly stellar products since starting her own makeup line in 2015, but none have been quite as sought-after as Skin Fetish. The highlighting kits, which featured a dual-ended/balm, shimmery luminizing powder, and dual-fiber brush, flew off the shelves faster than you could refresh your web browser, as makeup enthusiasts scrambled to finally discover the secret behind the otherworldly complexions that McGrath has become know for creating over her three-decade-long career. “It's been my secret weapon for 25 years," McGrath said at her most recent launch event in a sun-drenched hotel suite in New York City this week.
Since the initial debut of Skin Fetish in 2016, McGrath has re-stocked only once, much to the disappointment of fans and beauty editors across the U.S. But just days after her birthday (she’s a Gemini, in case you were wondering), the makeup master gave us a gift, announcing that Skin Fetish would be added to her permanent Unlimited Collection, and with a few surprises.
The Skin Fetish Collection — housed in a white-and-gold version of McGrath’s signature Art Deco-inspired packaging — is made up of ten products all sold separately. ("It's the same divine Skin Fetish formula but dressed up," she explained.) There is the fan-favorite Highlighter + Balm Duos in Versions Nude and Golden, the two original shades, and a new hue: Version: Bronze. "When we launched in 2016, it was because someone reported seeing the product backstage," McGrath explained. "It was good because it finally forced me to put out the products, but it meant we could only do the essential nude and gold colors." The Bronze was held up at the lab as McGrath and her team worked to not only ensure the color was perfect, but that it also layered well with the Nude and the Golden hues. "Each of the formulas in the palette had to be different so you could customize. The Bronze, for instance, is very blingy, and the Gold is very surreal, and I would say the Nude is more like a subliminal, virtual reality-kind of shine. So it's great that you can blend all three together so it works really well." And that's really what makes Skin Fetish stand apart from all the other highlighters out there — the fact you can use the products to achieve so many different levels of shine. "You can start out with a tiny amount of dew, all the way to the couture highlighting you see at runway shows," said McGrath, who loves to layer the Golden and Nude hues together. But whether you like a crystal-clear shine or an intense pink shimmer on your cheekbones, Pat had one overall goal of the entire collection: "We don't want people to compliment you on your highlighter. We want them to ask, 'What did you do to your skin? Where have you been and what are you doing?'"
The individual Iridescent Pink and Fine Gold powders found in the OG 003 kits are now packaged together alongside a third twinkly warm bronze powder called Bronze Nectar, in what I consider the most epic highlighting palette of all time. Silky and incredibly pigmented, the powders aren’t so much shimmery as they are incandescent, creating a multifaceted glow that “looks like skin," McGrath explained. "It's not a chunky glitter."
Also making a comeback is the buffing brush, a dual-fiber brush that can be used to literally burnish powders, liquids, or creams onto your skin. "I also love it as a mini foundation brush," Pat said. "It's a trick all you editors actually told me!"
Rounding out the collection is the clear Lip Fetish balm, plus four tinted versions of the fan-favorite formula. Hitting shelves a few weeks later than the rest of the products (July 10th according to the website, but that date was not confirmed at the event), the shades echo a few of the mega-watt hues in McGrath’s eye shadows. There’s Nude Astral (an ethereal pink opalescence), Gold Astral (a gilded gold pearlescence), Bronze Astral (a copperized bronze iridescence), and VR Pink Astral (a coral with blue iridescence), the latter being sold exclusively to patmcgrath.com. "They're perfect for summer," Pat exclaimed.
The Skin Fetish Highlighter + Balm Duos ($55 each), Sublime Skin Highlighting Trio ($68), and Buffer 003 Brush ($25) will be available on June 21, 2018 on patmcgrath.com and June 28, 2018 at sephora.com and in select Sephora stores nationwide, while the Lip Fetish Balms ($38 each) will be available in July.
