Pat McGrath Is Adding Lip Gloss to Her Permanent Collection, So Matte Lips Are Officially Over [Update]

UPDATE (April 28, 2018): As with all things Pat Mcgrath-related, we wait with bated breath for any news, and we have yet another tidbit about the upcoming launch of her upcoming glosses. Because all of McGrath's releases are gorgeous, it's not like we needed swatches to know that these would be any different, but it's still fun to take a look — and now, thanks to Instagram account (and beauty sleuth) Trendmood1, we have a sneak peek at all 14 of the upcoming shades.

McGrath's own Instagram has provided close-ups of a few shades of the upcoming glosses already, including Gold Allure and Pale Fire Nectar, but this is the first time fans have seen the whole collection in all its glory, and the glosses really are gorgeous. If these are just what you've been looking for, they'll be available on May 10th.

After nearly two years of a matte lips obsession permeating the market (thanks to Kylie, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Kat Von D to name a few), lip gloss is beginning to creep back into our beauty lexicon. Brands have slowly and quietly been relaunching their lip gloss formulas (thanks, in major part, to better technology), while for the past two seasons, glossy lips have made an appearance on the runways at shows like Miu Miu, Philosophy, and Haider Ackermann. And with yesterday's announcement — that Pat McGrath is adding 14 lip glosses to her Pat McGrath Labs permanent collection — it's safe to say that high-shine lips have the beauty legend's stamp of approval, and because of that, you're about see a hell of a lot more of them.

McGrath wasn't following a trend, however, when she decided to launch her Pat McGrath Labs Unlimited Edition: Gloss. "I was so obsessed with Lip Fetish, and really all things lip, so the next natural next step was to have a gloss." But per usual, McGrath wasn't about to just come out with any old goopy lip gloss. Hers had to be 1) comfortable wear 2) easy to apply and 3) in shades you really want to wear.

To ensure the formula wasn't the least bit sticky, McGrath developed the glosses with what she refers to as a "gel matrix formulation." "There's a little bit of oil in there that gives you a comfort and an ease," she explained to myself and fellow beauty editors at the press preview this morning. "I wanted them to feel like you're wearing a lip balm."

McGrath honed in on the doe foot applicator as well, ensuring the felt tip had a concave center and tapered end, depositing the perfect amount of formula onto your lips with one swipe. "It adds to the ease factor and makes it less messy," McGrath said.

As for the colors, there's a good mix of shimmery and non-shimmery options, the latter including Dare to Bear, a peach nude with gold pearl that is the first peachy-nude gloss I've tried that doesn't look chalky on my lips, and Flesh 4, a warm, mid-tone brown that McGrath couldn't stop swiping on herself during the event. Some of the pearlescent hues — Aliengelic, Gold Allure, Blitz Gold, and Pale Fire Nectar (shown below) — are reminiscent of the limited-edition glosses that Pat has launched in her past lip kits, while there are a few bright shades thrown in the mix, like Blood 2, a classic blue-red color, and Paraphernalia, a magenta flecked with blue iridescent pearl.

McGrath recommends several ways to wear her glosses. "For the freshest look, you just swipe them straight on bare lips," she said. "Or, you can prep your lips with a bit of foundation to take down the natural tone of your lips, which creates a different effect. For a real '60s look, you can top your lips with concealer before putting on the gloss, and then finally, you can put them over our lip pencils. With the pencil, you outline the lips and color in the entire mouth, and then for the rest of the day, you can dab on your gloss. It's actually my favorite way to wear them."

This launch also features a couple "firsts" for McGrath. For one, how she's packaging them. Per usual, you can buy them individually for $28 each both on McGrath's website and Sephora.com, or you can purchase the entire set via the Everything Kit ($325), which contains all 14 glosses and is a patmcgrath.com exclusive. The newness is that there are now four-piece sets separated by undertone ($95 each), including Version: Skin Show - Cool, Version: Skin Show - Warm, and Version: Colour Blitz, making it more clear to the consumer on what exactly they'll find inside.

The other "first" is the packaging itself. McGrath listened to beauty editor and consumer feedback and updated her signature (and sometimes copied) sequins-in-a-bag packaging. Yes, there's still sequins in the bag, but now the sequins are contained in an internal, sealed bag that keeps them from flying everywhere. Plus, the top of the bag now has a zipper seal, similar to a Ziploc bag, allowing those of us who collect her highly-covetable launches neatly tucked away in their twinkly pouches.
