Parsley Is Being Recalled In 5 States Due To Contamination

Dole is issuing a voluntary recall on parsley after a sample in Michigan was found to be contaminated. The “precautionary limited recall” is happening in five states with the curly leaf parsley.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture discovered the contamination when a “random, routine regulatory sample collected in Michigan tested positive for non-O157 STEC (Shigatoxin-producing E. coli)," according to the Food & Drug Administration website.

Packages with a harvest date between August 18, 2021, or August 19, 2021, are being recalled. The curly leaf parsley was distributed to five states, including Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri. If you bought parsley from those states, check to see if it’s Dole brand with a PLU number of 4899 on the twist tie and a UPC of 0 3383 80330 0.

So far, no illnesses have been reported, but the “shiga-toxin-producing E. coli can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it,” according to the notice. “Symptoms of infection may include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.” The illness mostly affects children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

Only this specific shipment of curly leaf parsley with those PLU and UPC codes are being recalled. No other parsley are included in the recall. If you purchased one of the bunches of parsley being recalled, do not consume it and throw it away. You can also return to the place of purchase for a refund. If you have any questions or concerns, call the Dole Consumer Center at 1-800-356-3111.
