Parrot’s Funny Greeting for Her Brother Is Just Like a Human Teenager

Parrots are experts at mimicking sounds and words that they hear, and they know when to use them. Cosmo is an African Grey parrot who has a human brother. Anytime he gets home, she greets him in the same way, and she totally sounds like a teenager when she does it!

Cosmo's mom shared a video on Tuesday, April 16th of the parrot and her 'bro' greeting each other. Make sure your sound is on so you can hear the exchange!

She sounds just like my kids! 'Sup' and 'bro' are both used at my house every day! I thought it was funny that Cosmo's mom shared that she only greets her brother like that and nobody else! Commenters got a kick out of the greeting too. @Rosebud pointed out, "Love me? Head nod…almonds now!!" @B pointed out, "Now we know who Coz gets his deep voice from!" and @Anne added, "Aww love her voice change to his, she’s a clever girl." Cosmo's mom responded, "It's funny how she changes her voice to match the person she is talking to. She will talk like me, my husband, son and my mom."

Cool Facts About Talking Parrots

When I was growing up, my dad brought a parrot home, and he named him Otis. He is like another sibling because he's been around so long; my parents still have him, and he's in his late 40's now. He is an Amazon parrot, which are known for being big talkers. He has a huge vocabulary, not to mention all of the sounds that he can mimic. Macaws also mimic sounds, and while they don't talk as much as some parrots like Cosmo (she's an African Grey) do, they can learn words and phrases.

Did you know that birds love to sing and listen to music? Of course, birds don't understand the lyrics, but they do react to music like we do. Our parrot Otis' favorite song is 'Old MacDonald Had a Farm", and he can sing it and whistle it. Cosmo is a huge Beastie Boys fan, and when she asks Google to play her favorite song and it doesn't, she just sings it herself!

Now here's the cool fact about birds and music: Researchers at Emory University found that when birds hear birdsongs, they respond to the music similarly to how people do. Pathways that the human brain employs when it listens to music are the same ones that a bird brain employs. Pretty cool, huh?

How can you tell if your bird is enjoying a tune? They dance! They bob and weave, move back and forth, and display other physical responses to songs just like we do. They might not be on beat with the music, but you can tell they're groovin'!

If you have a pet parrot or are thinking about getting one, make sure to play all types of music for it so that you can figure out which genre it likes the best. Then play the same songs over and over and before you know it, your parrot will be singing those lyrics!
