Parkland Activist Emma Gonzalez Was Not Impressed by Kanye West Calling Her His Hero
After almost a year away from Twitter, Kanye West returned to the platform with a vengeance on Friday, April 13. He started off casually enough by promoting a new album—seemingly titled Love Everyone—and dishing advice like “get past the past." Which, OK. But not two weeks later, on Wednesday, April 25, the rapper’s tweets took a much more controversial spin: He tweeted what read as his support for President Trump, calling him “his brother," and posted a photo wearing a Make America Great Again hat.
"You don't have to agree with trump but the mob can't make me not love him," read one of Kanye's tweets. "We are both dragon energy. He is my brother. I love everyone. I don't agree with everything anyone does. That's what makes us individuals. And we have the right to independent thought."
He even caught Trump's attention with these: The President retweeted West shortly after.
The tweets (and presidential endorsement) brought West a lot of criticism from fans, and Kim Kardashian even stepped in to defend her spouse.
West, however, hasn't stopped tweeting. Late last night, he posted his support for Emma Gonzalez, the Parkland shooting survivor-turned-activist who went viral after her emotional gun control rally speech. “My hero Emma Gonzalez,” he captioned a photo of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior.
This didn’t go over well with some members of West’s fan base, some of whom were seemingly bigger fans of West's Trump-supporting tweets. “You’re going to have to Tweet another photo of you in a MAGA hat to make up for this one!,” one follower replied to West. Another read: BOOOOO.
But Gonzalez had the perfect response to West's tweet, making it clear she wasn't impressed by what seemed like another sudden switch in West's political ideology. She posted a picture of her own hero to her Twitter feed. “My hero James Shaw Jr,” she wrote—copying West's formatting—under a picture of Shaw. He's the man who stopped the gunman at a Tennessee Waffle House shooting last Sunday and has since raised over $100,000 on GoFundMe for the victims.
Just a few minutes later (coincidentally or not), West posted a very serious-looking selfie that read: “Inspired by Emma.”
Since then, West has tweeted a happy birthday to Travis Scott, fellow rapper and daughter of Stormi Jenner, and told his 27.9 million followers to "remove worry." What he'll tweet next, nobody knows.
