Paris Hilton was, without question, one of the biggest style stars of the 2000s. And one of her most talked-about looks was a viral image of the heiress seemingly wearing a top that read 'stop being poor'. But, what if we told you that that outfit never happened? Yep, 16 years later, Paris has taken to Instagram to set the record straight about the famous pic, revealing that the top was actually Photoshopped, and the original image said something else entirely.
The post, captioned "Debunking the #STOPBEINGPOOR myth. 🙅🏼♀️😹 Don’t believe everything you read. 😏 #Iconic 👑", features Paris speaking to the camera with an image of the 'stop being poor' top in the background.
"So there's this photo online of me, I'm sure you've seen it," she says, before panning across to reveal the picture we've seen many times. But then things get interesting...
"I never wore that shirt," Paris continues. "This was completely Photoshopped, everyone thinks it's real but that's not the truth."
Paris goes on to reveal that the top actually said something else and, to be honest, it actually makes a lot more sense.
"This is what it really said: 'Stop being desperate'. Don't believe everything you read."
Anyone else super shook right now? I mean, when you think about it, 'stop being desperate' is 100% iconic, and totally something we could imagine Paris saying. Fun fact: the original design was actually from the 2005 launch of her sister Nicky Hilton's clothing line, Chick.
Here's a closer look at the real pic:
I just can't believe it's taken 16 years for us to hear the true story. But hey, Paris is reclaiming the moment in her own time and we're all ears for debunking internet myths.
Side note, is it just me, or does anyone else kinda want a 'stop being desperate' shirt now?
