The last God of War game to come out (not including a collection and remastered version of God of War 3) was released in 2013, so it’s been some time since God of War graced your screens in a new game. At the PlayStation Media Showcase for Paris Games Week, the next God of War is coming next year, developed by SIE Santa Monica Studio.

In a soft reboot for the franchise, it has the titular God of War, Kratos, beating the everloving about any baddies in his way, with the story now moving towards Norse Mythology, where previous games used Greek Mythology.

For the story, Kratos now has a kid, Atreus, meaning this game has a bit more of a focus on Kratos being more of, well, an adult, acting as a mentor to his child and perhaps murdering less gods in front of his new child. The trailer doesn't show much, but the way Atreus talks in the trailer implies the story will follow him learning about the world, from the innocence and naivety of youth to the constant battles in his father's world.

It’s single-player only, with more of a typical modern RPG style than the other God of War games, with free camera movement making it less of an arcade-like hack and slash title. The combat is changed, too, with Kratos now using a somewhat slower axe than the double blades he's previously used.

The trailer does show that, although some of the attacks do show how the older style of combat, of button mashing and juggling weak opponents with the swing of a weapon, is still an influence.

God of War is releasing in early 2018, for the PS4 only.
