Parents Are Outraged About These Marijuana-Print Leggings for Little Girls
Online retailer Amazon is selling a pair of patterned pants marketed as having “digital printed leaves,” but the design is clearly a collage of marijuana leaves, and parents and grandparents are now raising a stink about the inappropriate attire. Amazon sells the pants via online retailer JTC/Happy@Life. They’re 100 percent polyester and sell for $8.18.
The offending garment, which is meant for girls ages 3 to 8, was first flagged by a grandmother shopping for a Christmas gift for her granddaughter, according to the Huffington Post. After complaining to the company, she said, “I think that’s just very inappropriate for a 3-year-old,” she said. “It’s not something they should be advertising.”
Meanwhile, other parental figures are hopping on the furor train over the cannabis-themed slacks. A Twitter firestorm erupted and included tweets such as, “Stop normalizing pot! Sends kids the wrong message,” “This is very inappropriate especially for a kid.” Others aren’t seeing what the fuss is all about though, with one person tweeting, “SERIOUSLY? It’s not like the toddler is gonna smoke em … it’s clothing, get over it already!” and another writing, “Uh … what ever happened to the ability to not buy them.”
Naturally, anti-drug activists are having their say as well. They feel it’s irresponsible to manufacture and sell a garment that features pot leaves and direct it toward children. “Why would you have that? You’re advertising that you’re showing acceptability to them,” says Diane Ramseyer, the executive director of Drug-Free Charlotte County, according to the publication.
This is apparently not the first time pot-themed clothing has been marketed for kids. According to the Daily Mail, a marijuana-themed dress was up for sale earlier this year by a Polish retailer, but it’s since been taken down. And the website CafePress sells a slew of pot-centric clothes and accessories for kids and babies, including and onesies and bibs with sayings like, “My parents are potheads,” and “Hangin’ with my buds.”
Last year, “an anti-drug group went to New Hampshire malls to show how easy it is for kids to buy products with marijuana references,” according to local news station WOKQ. They found kid-size hats, sweatshirts, and more with marijuana leaves and slogans such as, “I love pot.”
At the time of this article’s publication, the whistle-blowing grandmother allegedly still hasn’t gotten a response from Amazon about the pot-themed pants, and neither Amazon nor JTC/Happy@Life has commented on the controversy.
