SoulCycle Instructors Reveal Their Beauty Routines

By Sarah Walter, InStyle.com

Every week SoulCycle instructors put their bodies to the test, leading workouts for packs of cyclists—often multiple times a day. And while a full face of makeup is a no-go when breaking a sweat, it’s nice to have some go-to beauty products that can endure intense cardio without melting or smearing. SoulCycle instructors know how to keep their pre-ride beauty routines to a minimum—here’s what some of them take along for the ride!

Karyn Nesbit, Brooklyn, N.Y.
“Most of the time I’m rolling pretty bare faced, sometimes use mascara, usually use a tinted lip balm. Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser ($38; sephora.com) is my go-to face wash. When I feel like wearing mascara I use CoverGirl’s Lashblast Waterproof Volume Mascara ($8; drugstore.com), and when I’m feeling suuuuper crazy I’ll throw on Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner ($10; ulta.com). Maybelline’s Baby Lips Electro Lip Balm in Strike a Rose ($4; maybelline.com) and Clinique’s Chubby Stick in Chunky Cherry ($17; sephora.com) are my go-to lip products.”

“Before heading to teach class, I remove any makeup with Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes ($8;drugstore.com). My makeup for class is pretty minimal since we are sweating from that very first song and I don’t want it running down my face. I start by curling my lashes with a Shiseido eyelash curler ($19; sephora.com) and follow with a swipe of Benefit’s BADgal Waterproof Mascara ($19; sephora.com). I finish with some color on my lips using Clinique’s Chubby Stick in a bright pink ($17; sephora.com). It’s perfect for teaching since it’s moisturizing without being sticky, and I don’t have to worry about my hair getting stuck while I’m rocking out to that beat!”

Emma Lovewell, New York
“I usually teach class with little-to-no makeup on. The one thing I do wear though is waterproof mascara. I’ve tried many different types, expensive and non, and the one that has outdone them all is one you can find at the pharmacy—Maybelline’s Volum’ Express Colossal Mascara ($7; ulta.com). I also have incredibly straight eye lashes, and I find that after curling them, putting on waterproof mascara actually makes them hold the curl. I found out about Volum’ Express from makeup artists on shoots that I’ve done, and SO many makeup artists use this brand for fitness shoots. It’s inexpensive, but it really does the trick and will not smudge or run down your face.”

“Hydration is the most important pre-ride beauty routine for me; a clean, hydrated face is my go-to look when teaching and riding at SoulCycle. My favorite products are EOS Lip Balm ($3.50;ulta.com), Benefit’s Triple Performing Facial Emulsion ($32;sephora.com) and their It’s Potent! Eye Cream ($34;sephora.com).
