There are over 1,000 different species of parasites that can infect you -- but do we need to be worried about them? The Doctors are joined by biologist and host of Animal Planet’s “Monsters Inside Me,” Dan Riskin to help inform us about the most common and terrifying parasites that you should be aware of.

Watch: Leech Lodged in Throat?

Dan reveals that during a trip to Belize he was bitten by a mosquito and was infected with a botfly, which if left untreated the parasite would have begun eating his flesh. Dan informs us of some parasites that we should be concerned about, which include:

Screwworms: Dan says that while this parasite has been eradicated from America, in 2016, deer in the Florida Keys experienced an outbreak. This parasite is a worm that burrows to find flesh to eat. If left untreated, this parasite can kill you.

Roundworms: Dan tells us about a man who found a roundworm in his mouth. The parasite moved around in the flesh of his mouth for several weeks, but doctors were unable to find it. He finally pulled the worm out of his cheek with a pair of forceps. It is not know how the man contracted it, but Dan says it could be due to him having ingested part of an insect. Dan says this is very rare and his case was only the 13 confirmed case of this parasite in the United States.

To avoid parasites, Dan says to always wash your hands before eating or cooking and to always cook your meat to the proper temperature.
