The iconic holiday film “Elf” is a must-watch for us during the holidays. So we were excited to see that this year, there’s a new pancake mix and syrup to get us in the spirit. These will be essentials for any holiday movie fan, especially ones who recognize syrup as one of the four major elf food groups.

Rolling out in grocery store aisles in October, Mrs. Butterworth’s “Elf” themed sugar cookie pancake kit and specially-bottled “Elf” syrup not only immediately inspire nostalgia about the movie, but taste really great, too. Recently, I had the opportunity to make the sugar cookie pancakes for my family and the verdict was as clear as Gimbels’ department store windows: I will definitely be making this all season long.

Introducing New "Elf" Sugar Cookie Pancakes and Syrup

Mrs. Butterworth’s "Elf" themed sugar cookie pancake kit comes with a simple, just-add-water package of batter mix along with icing, and red and green sprinkles. The mix was easy to turn into pancake batter, and the addition of the instructed tablespoon of red and green sprinkles gave the whole thing a festive, Funfetti vibe. I got about 12 pancakes out of the mixture, cooking them in a cast iron skillet on my stove.

The premade white icing comes in a squeezable pouch, and the instructions say to add about a tablespoon of milk and whisk it to make the consistency more like a glaze. I prefer my glazes on the runnier side, so I added about 3 tablespoons of milk until it was the perfect consistency. After stacking my pancakes onto plates in piles of three, I topped them with icing and red and green sprinkles, then finished them off with a drizzle of Mrs. Butterworth’s "Elf" syrup.

The result was a stack of pancakes that would make Buddy the Elf launch into holiday song. Despite Buddy’s love of sugar in the film, the combination wasn’t sickeningly sweet. The icing, sprinkles, and pancakes had a distinct sugar cookie feel without tasting as sugary as an actual cookie. The syrup, which is decked out to look like Buddy’s elf uniform in the film, was simply Mrs. Butterworth’s classic goodness, and it really elevated the flavors of the special breakfast.

The only thing that made me sad about this winning combo is that my teens are too old for "Elf on the Shelf" now. If I still had small kids at home, you can bet our elves, Jingle and Garland, would have arrived with sugar cookie pancakes and “Elf” syrup, wanting to have breakfast for dinner and watch the movie. The good news is, we’ll still do a dinner-and-a-movie family night this holiday season, feasting on elf-worthy pancakes and laughing along with Will Ferrel as he saves Christmas.

The movie-themed sugar cookie pancake kit retails for about $7 and the specially bottled syrup will sell for around $4 and change. Both items should be on your grocery store's shelves now, "spreading cheer for all to [taste]."
