Palisades Tahoe Celebrates Employees For Opening More Terrain

Glass half empty, or glass half full?

Mountain half closed, or mountain half open?

Officials at Palisades Tahoe think the latter.

"We have a few small terrain expansions coming up this weekend!"

Specifically, a couple of new lifts will be turning this weekend (let out a yew, please)!

Palisades announced that "Exhibition is now open to the mid-station, Roundhouse will open for the season on Friday, 12/15, Yellow will open for the season on Saturday, 12/16."

Exhibition is in the bottom middle, below.

Yellow and Roundhouse are located at Alpine Meadows, across the gondola from Palisades Tahoe.

This week, the base-to-base gondola was closed. Local lore said it's because maintenance was going on, nothing to do with conditions. It was spinning again today, though!

Speaking of conditions: Palisades asks guests to remain positive about the additional terrain, even with the sharky cover.

(I'm not complaining; trees are fun even when it's a little rocky in the gullies... that's why you rock 6-year-old skis instead of brand new ones before things get soft!)

Officials at Palisades also explained their reasoning, "While we did get some much-needed moisture last week, it still wasn’t quite enough to help significantly expand operations."

"Our snow surfaces teams (grooming and snowmaking) have been working around the clock to try to build out as much as possible. So while we think of these expansions as “small,” please know that there are many, many, many hours of work put into them."

Snowmaking is incredibly demanding: working night shifts in cold, often brutal conditions, just to get all of us resort skiers on the snow the next morning while they sleep.

Sunday River (shout out East Coast!) put out a cool little video on female snowmakers who work in the grueling--but highly respected-- industry.

Check it out below.

To everyone in Tahoe, we hope to see you on the chairs or hiking up to non-lift accessible terrain, and to snowmakers everywhere, we salute you!
