When Sofia Marcogliese and her boyfriend, Oleg, moved in together for the first time into this 950-square-foot rental apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, they weren’t expecting their existing furniture to go so well together.

“But what really ties everything together is my mother’s oyster painting,” Sofia explains. “She’s a Montreal-based artist, and my sister, Laura-Michelle, curated and digitalized her work through her online gallery, Glasshouse. Every piece in the apartment fits with the colors included in the painting, which is named ‘Perle Rare.'”

The couple has been renting their space, which includes one bedroom and one home office, and they share it with their dog, Auguste. They pay $5,625 per month in rent, and moved here in July 2023.

Sofia describes their interior design style with words like mid-century modern, organic modern, and Scandinavian, but says she and Oleg’s style is actually pretty different. The couple came up with a way to marry both of their preferences, though.

“We do appreciate our own unique styles, and so, we dedicated the first floor of our home to mine, and the second to his. I prefer monochrome color palettes and big pieces to expand the space. Oleg is more heteroclite and eclectic in his style,” Sofia explains. “With our first floor being our unwinding space, bringing down our energy from our busy work days, we wanted calming colors that help us separate work from home, as we have an upstairs office. Oleg, bringing our energy up high — used his colorful library and prints to decorate our second floor, our office space.”

“My mother has been an immense influence in my interior design journey,” Sofia continues. “She has taught me everything I know, whether it’s determining the ideal dimensions for furniture, finding the right layout, hanging pretty much anything on walls, and tying everything together. It’s my first home decorating experience without her being physically present with me, although we FaceTimed many times throughout the process. When I look at any item in our apartment, I can feel my mother’s wisdom surround me.”
