When I was 13, I spent two months at a summer camp in the Adirondacks. After a day of particularly intense physical activity, the inside of my thighs were bright red and burning. One of the older girls very nicely listened to me complain and said, “yeah, chub rub is the worst.” It was a momentous experience to learn that not only did it have a name, but that it was a pretty common thing, too.
Once I knew this pain and discomfort had a name, chub rub or, more officially, thigh-chafing, I could begin to look for a solution. For a while these were ad hoc; a stick of deodorant rubbed on my inner thighs or bicycle shorts worn under dresses.
