There are few trends that truly transcend seasons. And while, yes, they might be particularly associated with one specific time of year, they work year-round — summer, fall, winter, and spring. Because of their versatile nature, we tend to see a lot more of them, too, which is why cargo pants, one such seasonless staple, are basically popping up nonstop.

And guess what? We just spotted them again, this time on Padma Lakshmi, who is the latest celeb — but certainly not the last —  to step out in the practical pants. The former Top Chef host clearly knows how to piece together a comfy-cool outfit, opting for a black turtleneck sweater that’s the definition of cozy-cute and a pair of oversized, tie-dye cargo pants with ample pockets. She rounded out the look with black, gum-sole sneakers and aviator sunglasses, but there's simply no denying the star of the look: those pants.

Lakshmi’s pants from the Attico featured the aforementioned pockets that are practical in that you can store all your day-to-day essentials (ahem, wallet, keys, phone), which allows you to forgo a bag altogether if you wish. Sometimes, complete hands-free carrying is the best, and cargos are among the rare breed of bottoms that permits that. The print — a dark-hued tie-dye — added an extra eye-catching element, while the fitted waist and roomier legs ensured they still looked flattering.

The quintessential utilitarian trend has been around for, well, ever, but we’ve been seeing a lot more of the ultra-baggy, practical pants this year. 2022 saw a rise in roomy jeans that were so big, you might have mistaken them for maxi skirts. Cargo pants in various silhouettes and colors — because they're not just forest green — are a natural addition in this sartorial wave that seems to favor functionality and, of course, comfort.

Aside from the practical and comfortable elements, cargos are also ageless. Celebs from Oprah to Jennifer Lawrence have stepped out in baggy pants, with Oprah opting for the style for a trip to Petra, Jordan where she rode a camel (these pants are really down for it all), whereas Lawrence went with a very Kim Possible approach, wearing her green pair with a black tank top and her go-to Adidas Sambas.

Cargos are cool! They’re easy-going! They’re versatile! Honestly, they’re everything you want in pants (err, a friend?) and more, which is why they’re the best investment you can make today. Shop more styles below — and prepare to wear them all the time.
