Padma Lakshmi recently shared a surprising source of physical and mental strength in her latest Instagram post: Boxing!

In the new video, the Top Chef alum, 53, is working with a trainer in a boxing gym with pink gloves on. “Just for the record, I hate these. I’m launching a formal complaint,” Padma says... before absolutely conquering her boxing workout, which consisted of throwing some strong punches, weighted ball slams, and jump roping. (Btw, Energy by Beyoncé was playing in the background—very fitting!)

In Padma’s caption, she explained why she looks forward to her boxing workouts—even though she might claim otherwise. “I used to feel physically weak and unable to defend myself starting with being bullied in junior high. It wasn’t until the poet Mary Karr introduced me to boxing when she gifted me a lesson for my 30th birthday, that I finally started to gain confidence and feel grounded in my own body,” the TV host wrote.

“I had to take a break from it after hurting my knee and elbow earlier this year, but boxing is the exercise that I most look forward to. I find that it gives me the best results physically, but more importantly – mentally!” she continued in the caption. “Boxing requires you to be present and in the moment. No matter what mood I go into the gym with, after boxing I always come out feeling better and glad that I went. I can’t wait to get back to it soon!!”

Boxing is a high intensity, full-body workout that requires a mind and body connection. “There's so much to think about and so much coordination,” fitness coach Taylor Rae Almonte-Roman, CPT, previously told Women's Health of boxing's benefits....“It's a great opportunity to still get that heart rate up, the calorie burn, the sweat that a lot of people like to feel when they work out, without just jumping all over the place.” Not only does boxing target your legs, hips, core, chest, and shoulders, but it also helps you with your hand-eye coordination, agility, strength, and even your confidence, says Almonte-Roman.

Whether she's boxing or getting her sweat on another way, Padma is dedicated to her workout routine. She previously told Women's Health that she exercises at least five times a week for 90 minutes. Her favorite workout is jump roping, and she can do about 2,000 jumps per day, in a matter of 35 minutes. Padma also does Pilates a few times a week, but boxing is what makes her feel her best physically and mentally.

As for her diet, Padma shared with WH that she practices mindful eating, and aims to eat a plant-based diet while occasionally eating lean animal protein, like chicken, fish, and ground turkey. Whatever she’s fueling her body with, it’s clearly giving her an abundance of energy!
