What is ‘Padam Padam’? The Kylie Minogue song is taking over TikTok — and causing some confusion at the same time

Kylie Minogue may be best known for her chart-topping hits like “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” and the classic “The Loco-Motion,” but the Aussie singer has just released another new single that people can’t seem to stop talking about: “Padam Padam.”

The upbeat pop song, which was released on May 18, already has over 2.2 million plays on Spotify and was recently performed live for the first time on American Idol. But at the same time, it’s also been the subject of a lot of confusion, as people online continue to ask themselves, what does it mean?

According to Know Your Meme, the song’s title is actually an onomatopoeia for the sound that a heartbeat makes. When you consider the song’s lyrics, it’s easy to see how that ties in.

Chances are, you probably heard about the song first on TikTok or even Twitter, where it’s been the subject of countless viral memes for days now.

Others simply highlight the infectious nature of the song, which has caused many people to have it on repeat.

There are also some memes, which have mostly been shared on Twitter, that have started to take the words slightly out of context, leading to even more confusion for those out of the loop.

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time “padam” has been used in a song. In fact, a 1951 song performed by French artist Edith Piaf had the very same title, though the song itself was completely different.

Piaf’s single, which was written and sung entirely in French, was said to convey “a feeling of nostalgia, evoking the singer’s memories of past relationships and love.”

Minogue’s single, on the other hand, has to do with a “romantic attraction to a mysterious male stranger,” according to U.K. outlet the Independent. The latter was produced by Lostboy and is set to be released on the singer’s upcoming sixteenth album, Tension.

So far, it’s safe to say that the new song is more than just a catchy club tune. As one fan on Twitter put it, “padam padam by kylie minogue isn’t just a song it’s a cultural reset, it’s the oxygen you breathe, it’s a lifestyle, an escape from this cruel world filled with thieves. it’s art, a hug from a loved one, everything you’ve ever wanted.”

It’s even been declared the “song of the summer,” which is pretty impressive for barely being out for a week. But then again, once you give it a listen, you might not be able to get it out of your head, either.
