Over 3,000 Pounds Of Empanadas Are Being Recalled Across The Midwest

A number of empanadas are being recalled following a US Department of Agriculture investigation. SAS Food Enterprises is recalling 3,768 pounds of frozen empanadas after it was revealed they were mislabeled as being USDA inspected.

The Illinois-based company, SAS Foods Enterprises, apparently manufactured these empanada products without federal inspection and were labeled with a false USDA mark of inspection label. Products in question were developed between January 1 and September 11 of this year.

After an anonymous tip was received, the issue was discovered. This recall includes one-pound bags of clear, plastic containers with the label SAS Food Empanadas de Pollo Chicken Patties and SAS Food Empanadas de Carne Beef Patties. The establishment number on each of the recalled items is EST. 38548 and can be found inside the USDA mark of inspection. Despite the labeling, the company has no affiliation with Establishment 38548 meaning the empanadas were no inspected prior to being distributed.

This recall affects Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, although there are no illnesses linked to the recall at the time of publication. Empanadas were recalled not due to a specific contamination or bacteria, but rather because they were sold without the benefit of USDA approval. It's important to check your freezer to see if you have any of the items in your possession and to dispose of them immediately without consuming.

If you have further questions about the recall you can contact Stella Londono, Administration, SAS Food Enterprises Inc. at sasfoodinc@hotmail.com or at (847) 275-1690.
