Over 100 Golden Retrievers Will Cross Boston Marathon Finish Line to Honor Beloved Pup

Spencer brought so much joy to runners over the years.

As the 127th edition of the Boston Marathon approaches, a heartwarming tribute will take place on the eve of the event. Over 100 golden retrievers, accompanied by their families, will gather for a special trot towards the finish line in memory of Spencer, the official Boston Marathon dog, and his sister Penny.

Spencer's unwavering spirit made him an iconic symbol of the Boston Marathon. He captured hearts around the world by holding a flag that read "Boston Strong" along the marathon route, and by greeting thousands of runners as they passed by." Boston Strong" is a slogan that was created as part of the reaction to the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

People are touched by this heartwarming event, and @ Saratweets says, "Best news of the day." @Barneysnana replies, "They were lovely pups." @Patrick adds, "Wish I could show up for this little glimmer of heaven on earth."

Here's a sweet video about Spencer that was shot when he received the honor of being named The Official Dog of The Boston Marathon.

After multiple bouts with cancer, Spencer died on Feb. 17 at the age of 13. Sadly Spencer's niece, an 11-year-old Golden Retriever named Penny, died days later after a veterinarian discovered she was suffering from internal bleeding and that she had tumors on her liver and spleen.

The utterly tear-jerking part of this story is that according to MA Golden Meetups, the dogs in attendance will be wearing bandanas that say "Golden Strong" in homage to Spencer’s famous "Boston Strong" flag and will spend time with runners, families and visitors at the Marathon finish line the day before the marathon.

The event scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 16.
