Outlander's Sam Heughan Auditioned to Play a Young James Bond
Outlander star Sam Heughan revealed that he once auditioned for the role of James Bond back when the franchise was rebooting.
Speaking to Esquire, the Scottish actor said he put his hat in the ring for the part a few years ago, before Daniel Craig was named agent 007.
Heughan said being the fan-favorite contender is "kind of random and very strange."
Outlander fans know Sam Heughan for playing James "Jamie" Fraser, but the actor took a shot at becoming James Bond as well. The Scottish star recently opened up about vying to portray the iconic British spy while speaking to Esquire in a recent video interview.
"I actually have auditioned for James Bond back when they were rebooting Bond 21," Heughan said, referring to 2006's Casino Royale, the 21st film in the franchise. The role ultimately went to Daniel Craig, but Heughan revealed that there were talks of portraying Bond at a younger age. (Craig is about 13 years older than Hueghan.)
"When Daniel Craig came on board, they were talking about making him younger," he added.
"I don't know what happened, but very recently, I became the bookies' favorite to play Bond, which is kind of random and very strange," he continued. "I mean, we want a Scottish James bond, don't we?"
This isn't Heughan's first time speaking about the audition. Back in 2018, he reminisced during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan. "It was a pretty good experience," he said at the time. "It's about time we had a Scottish Bond."
He even pitched for Diane Lane to be the Bond girl. We'd watch it.
