As far as television props go, Jamie Fraser's tiny glasses on Outlander are about as iconic as Walter White's hat or Carrie Bradshaw's cosmo glass.

The specs were actually actor Sam Heughan idea, and a deviation from his character in the book series the show is based on.

“It was my idea,” Heughan told EW back in 2017.

“They [the producers] will claim it is theirs. But I sent an email to Ron Moore last year saying, ‘How about glasses?’ It’s not something in the books but I thought it would be a nice surprise. It’s a weakness of Jamie’s. He doesn’t have many. It’s nice, and it’s something we can play off. It’s kind of a disguise as well. He plays so many different characters and I felt when we first see Jamie, it would nice to see him as a completely different character, a gentrified Edinburgh man who has his own business.”

In season five of the much-beloved time-travel drama, Jamie is a long way from Edinburgh, but he's still rocking those iconic glasses in pre-United States North Carolina.

And in a new behind-the-scenes clip from episode 509, Caitriona Balfe reveals that she thinks the glasses are a bit Santa-like.

She recently posted a video on Twitter of Heughan in the frames, where she's singing "Santa Jamie" in the background—a play on "Santa Baby," of course.

Heughan even gets in on the fun adding a "ho, ho, ho" at the end.
