It was Outlander fun and games Thursday night when Sam Heughan, Caitríona Balfe, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin joined MTV’s Josh Horowitz at The 92nd Street Y, New York in an event to promote the new season of the epic time-travel series based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon.

The actors had just spent the day doing a press junket for Season 7, so they were ready to get their silly on, playing a few games with Josh that involved memes, reading each other’s lines, and avoiding questions that could lead to show spoilers.

But things got more real when Caitríona, who has now worked with Sam for 10 years—longer than some marriages last—talked about her pet peeve: Sam refuses to phone her but rather sends her long voice notes.

“If you’re going to spend the time talking into the phone, just call me,” is Caitríona’s point of view. “It’s not a monologue. It should be a conversation.”

Sam defends himself, saying, “I don’t have time to call you and I don’t really want to call you.”

“Exactly, that’s the point,” she defends her opinion. “It’s a b------t call. ‘I kind of want to say something but I don’t have time for you.’”

“You like to text and texting you lose a lot of intonation,” Sam continues to defend himself. “Also with a voice note, you can leave someone a beautiful message, they can hear your voice, and they can reply in their own time. It’s a lot more personal than a text.”

No one won this argument, so Josh continued the fun by showing the assembly the chemistry test that earned Caitríona the role of Claire Fraser (Sam had already been cast as Jamie). The two actors kind of cringed as they watched, and Sam commented at the end, “It is an interesting scene, though, how physical we were. We had just met.”

“He also made me take my heels off, so I looked really short,” Caitríona remembered. Then she added that, while she didn’t walk away knowing she had the role, she thought, “If I didn’t get it, I felt I don’t know what else I could have done. I left it all on the table.”

And while Josh did admit to the audience that he doesn’t ask hard-hitting questions about the show because the cast commentary has to remain spoiler-free, he did get the actors to be a little more serious when he broached their feelings now that they know that Season 8 will be the end of the series.

“We started talking about this for the EPK when we were doing stuff for the DVD for this season, and we started getting choked up,” Caitríona said. “This show has given us everything, given us our careers, given us so much in our lives. We have been embraced by you guys [the audience]. You guys have created an insane community that is so incredible, we’re honored and privileged that we get to spend time with you guys. It’s going to be more than 10 years by the time we finish. It’s going to be really hard to say goodbye. Probably a lot of guttural sobbing.”

Then she jokes, “But we’ll still send each other voice notes, won’t we?” referring to their earlier remarks.

From there, Sam chimes in: “Honestly, it felt tangible filming at the end of this season. We realized we were only going to come back and do it once more, but having said that, I think in this moment, we have so much to look forward to. I am really excited about you guys seeing this season. Then we get the opportunity to come back and really finish it in a satisfactory way. In a way that may not please everyone, but at least we get the chance to come back and finish the story and that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to finish the story. It’s been such a big part of my life.”
