As painful as it may have been, Outlander fans have somehow made it through the latest Droughtlander (aka that horrible time between seasons when there are no new installments of Claire and Jamie’s epic love story hitting your screens). Season 7 is finally premiering (the first episode comes out June 16, so mark your calendars!), but—and I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news here if you didn’t already know—it seems like you might want to savor those episodes an extra little bit because Outlander’s days are numbered.

Okay, will there be a season 8?

The show did get renewed for an eighth season (YAY!) but…it’ll be its last (not yay). Starz announced in January that it’ll be wrapping up the Outlander story with season 8, which means the network will figure out how to end the show without knowing how the book series ends, à la Game of Thrones (here’s hoping Starz pulls off a better ending though).

If you find yourself getting too sad about the impending series finale, just remember that there’s the prequel series, Blood of My Blood, that’s also on the way. It’ll be telling the love story between Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, and listen, I’m not a big gambler but I’m willing to bet that it’s gonna be hot, hot, HOT!

What would season 8 be about?

Here’s where things get a little less clear. Season 7 hasn’t even gotten the ball rolling yet (again, it premieres tomorrow), and it’s going to be a mega-size season with 16 episodes, so A LOT can happen in that time. PLUS, we don’t even know what books season 7 covers. It’ll definitely use the seventh book, but with those extra episodes, will they go into the eighth one too?! The ninth novel came out in 2021, which means there are some potential spoilers to take a sneak peek at for season 8, so without giving away too much, tensions are high, the Revolutionary War is creeping closer to Fraser’s Ridge, and Claire and Jamie are getting ready to do their part. Since the 10th book still isn’t out, how it all ultimately ends is anyone’s guess.

When would Outlander season 8 come out?

There’s some good news and some bad news: Filming for season 8 was scheduled to start this year, buuut according to star Caitríona Balfe, production is now on hold because of the writers’ strike. Of course it’s better to wait for the show’s writers to come back and have all the time they need to properly finish the scripts (lest we forget how shockingly bad some TV writing got during the 2007 strike when writers had to rush and seasons got cut short) but…that whole having patience thing is really hard! With no clear date set for production, a release date for season 8 is still a big TBD.
