Outlander fans are still months away from the premiere of season 5. In fact, the show's star Caitriona Balfe just recently shared a video from set, with the caption, "And so it begins....... Season 5 (yep that’s 1, 2, 3, 4..FIVE 🙀 ) prep time !!!!"
But the show has already been confirmed for another chapter after that. Here's what we know so far about season 6:
Outlander is officially coming back for a sixth season.
On May 9, 2018, Starz announced that the series would be renewed for two more seasons.
"Fans can rest assured their beloved Claire and Jamie will be back facing new challenges, adversaries and adventures in seasons five and six as we delve into American history and continue the story of the Frasers as they settle in the New World," Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement.
The renewal came as something of a surprise to star Caitriona Balfe.
"We kind of hoped that we would get a season five," she said, according to Digital Spy. "We weren't really expecting them to pick up both together, so that's really exciting."
In total, season 6 will have of 12 episodes.
That's the same number as season 5, but one less than earlier seasons.
Season 6 will be based on Diana Gabaldon's sixth book in the Outlander series: A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
Each season of Outlander thus far has been loosely based on one book, but there's a chance moving forward that the writers will deviate from that structure.
"Every year we approach it fresh," Moore told EW in March of last year. "Should we keep it a book a season? We’ve done that up until now. But we’ve talked about splitting books, and we’ve talked about combining them. We want to be free in the writers’ room to pick and choose and do what feels most comfortable that year."
Additionally, as we saw in season 4, the show's storyline is starting to veer away from the books ever so slightly, particularly regarding the character of Murtagh.
A premiere date has yet to be shared publicly.
Fans can expect the premiere of season 5 in early 2020, so season 6 likely won't air until 2021.
Additional seasons are unconfirmed at this point.
Right now, only seasons 5 and 6 are in the works, but should Starz choose to keep renewing, there's plenty of source material to go off of. Gabaldon is currently working on her ninth novel about Claire and Jamie, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, which she says will be finished later this year.
"Six seasons is an incredible run as it is, but I think Diana has a few more books [planned] so we'll see," Balfe said.
