'Outlander' Cast Adds 5, Including a Major Recast of Jamie's Relative

'Outlander' Season 7 will see the return of several characters from the past!

Outlander fans can look forward to season 7 of the time-traveling series with the return of several characters from past seasons. David Berry had announced last weekend at New York Comic Con the return of Lord John Grey, but today STARZ announced several others.

Also coming back for season 7 will be Graham McTavish, Nell Hudson, Steven Cree and Lotte Verbeek reprising their respective roles as Dougal MacKenzie, Jamie’s uncle whom he killed just before the battle of Culloden; Laoghaire Fraser, Jamie’s ex-wife and Marsali’s mother; Ian Murray, Young Ian’s father and Jamie’s brother-in-law; and Geillis Duncan, Claire’s former friend-turned-enemy and a fellow time traveler from the 1960s.

Since both Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan, who are Roger MacKenzie’s (Richard Rankin) ancestors, are dead, we can expect to see them in either flashbacks or dream sequences, but the others are very much still alive.

In an interesting twist that usually only happens on daytime dramas, Outlander has recast the role of Jenny Fraser Murray, Jamie’s sister, and Young Ian’s mother. The role was originated by Laura Donnelly in seasons 1-3 but had to be written out when Donnelly wasn’t available and will now be played by Kristin Atherton.

Also returning will be Andrew Whipp as Brian Fraser, Jamie’s father; and Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie, Marsali’s sister and Jamie’s stepdaughter.

“One of the many joys of our epic story is the element of time travel which allows us to revisit some of our favorite characters in different times and places, and we’re thrilled to welcome back so many familiar faces for season seven,” says Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner, writer and executive producer. “In addition to our returning cast, we’re also excited to welcome several new actors to the Outlander family and cannot wait to introduce them to fans in our extended season.”

The newcomers will include Gloria Obianyo as Mercy Woodcock, a free Black woman navigating the hardships of life in Colonial America; Rod Hallett as Benedict Arnold, the notorious Revolutionary soldier turned traitor; Chris Fulton as Rob Cameron, a new acquaintance of Roger and Brianna; Diarmaid Murtagh as Buck MacKenzie, the illegitimate son of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan, and Roger’s ancestor, a role previously played by McTavish in season 5.

Already announced new cast members include Charles Vandervaart, as William Ransom, Izzy Meikle-Small, as Rachel Hunter and Joey Phillips as Denzell Hunter.

Outlander season 7 is currently filming in Scotland.
