'Outer Range' Fans Are Searching Like Crazy to Find Out Where the Show Was Filmed

Outer Range is the new mind-bending sci-fi Western we can't stop talking about. The Prime Video thriller stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a Wyoming father and rancher fighting to keep his land. He's challenged by his neighbors, a mysterious stranger who is camping on his land, and other unexplained forces. While the storyline is captivating enough, the show's expansive scenery has captured the attention of viewers. The show takes place in small-town Wyoming, but that is not where the scenes were filmed.
Where Is Outer Range Filmed?
The show was originally scheduled to film in Canada, but plans changed due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Instead, filming took place primarily in New Mexico.
When Albuquerque Journal spoke to Amber Dodson, the New Mexico Film Office director, she said, "Outer Range is a major production employing thousands of New Mexicans over several months. We are so excited about this television series that will feature so many of New Mexico’s diverse landscapes and are grateful Amazon Studios has chosen New Mexico.”
According to Wide Open Country, "A significant portion of the show was filmed in Albuquerque. The Abbott Ranch is a set built not far from the I-25 Studios where all of the interior scenes were filmed. Some of the rodeo scenes in which we see Rhett Abbott (Lewis Pullman) competing were shot here and some of the local food trucks were even seen in the background." Santa Fe and Lamy, New Mexico, served as backgrounds for other scenes.
And the mountains in the background? They're CGI!
The scenes that take place in town were filmed in historic Las Vegas, New Mexico. Wide Open Country reports that the downtown area is Bridge Street, the bank is Community 1st Bank on Douglas Avenue, and the cafe is Odessa's Café. And some of the inside shots were filmed back on a sound stage in Los Angeles.
If some of the locations look familiar, it's for good reason. The New Mexico Film Office reports many popular shows and movies have been filmed in the state, including Better Call Saul, Transformers, Breaking Bad, Longmire, No Country for Old Men, and more.
