"Outer Banks" Season 2 Cliffhanger Has Fans Wanting Season 3 ASAP
Outer Banks is officially establishing itself as the series for cliffhangers. A worthy successor of season one, the Outer Banks season 2 finale also ended things on a high note (i.e. leaving us on the edge of our seat).
Even though the cast had already warned us things would be getting way more intense, most viewers were still in awe. After one year of anticipation, season 2 finally premiered on Netflix on July 30. The season picked up right where the first one left off, with Sarah and leader John B. making their way to the Bahamas and the rest of the Pogues in mourning back on North Carolina soil. Of course, the sophomore offering from the series addressed some of the questions left unanswered during season one – but, in turn, it also raised at least double the amount.
Season 1 was rife with murder, murder framing, shipwrecks, great escapes, and presumed deaths. Now, season 2 adds more attempted murders, abandoned islands, and magic – yeah, magic – to the mix.
With a little help from new Pogues member Cleo (Carlacia Grant), Sarah and John B. return to the U.S. from (unsuccessfully) treasure hunting in the Bahamas. Once they are back, Carla Limbrey (Elizabeth Mitchell) convinces the Pogues to aim for a different gold treasure: the cross of Santo Domingo. And off they go.
One thing leads to another. On their quest for the cross — all the while dealing with Carla (who some even theorize might have a secret identity) and Sarah’s murderous family — the friends (happily) wind up on a deserted island.
At the very end of the season, one of the biggest twists is revealed: John B.’s dad, aka Big John, is alive. (How? We don’t know.) In a recent interview, the series executive producers Jonas and Josh Pate admitted that they “knew [they] had that card" but “didn’t know that we would play it for sure.” The pair revealed that it was “around the sixth or seventh episode, when we were writing this year, we started to realize maybe we could do that.” ("That" meaning basically resurrecting Big John.)
Since the start of the series, the Pogues ringleader has been searching for his missing dad, and viewers are told and shown multiple times that he is, indeed, presumed dead. Season 2 shows us Carla (because, who else?) meeting up with Big John, who agrees to help her find the Shroud of Turin (also known as the Holy Shroud in real life.) In the Outer Banks world, however, the Shroud of Turin is described as a magical artifact, which has miraculous healing powers. And where is this coveted item believed to be? Inside the cross, of course. We love a treasure within a treasure. John B agrees to work with Carla as long as she agrees to help the Pogues.
Much like the first one, season 2 of Outer Banks featured 10 episodes. The series has yet to be renewed for a third but with all the twists and turns, fans already want… well, actually, fans need answers. For reference, season 2's renewal was announced in July 2020, a little bit over two months after the first one aired on the streaming giant in April – so we might be getting news soon. Judging from recent interviews, it seems like the writers already have stuff planned for the long-awaited return.
