More consistent sunny days are on the way, meaning we’ll soon be able to enjoy both indoor and outdoor spaces daily. To prove good design doesn’t have to end when you open your patio door, designer Nate Berkus created an outdoor oasis in collaboration with Sam’s Club. It serves up major inspiration and is completely shoppable, aka you can recreate it in your own backyard!

In a pop-up experience located in New York City’s Flatiron Plaza, Berkus designed a greenhouse-inspired space to get people thinking about how they want to use their own outdoor area this season. The space features a checkerboard floor made of outdoor pavers mixed with turf, which is based on a traditional 18th-century French pattern. He paired that with the modern set of eucalyptus wood furniture featuring washable cushions and deep seats. Outdoor planters with topiaries and string lights complete the look.

For many, Berkus says, designing an outdoor space can be challenging. “A lot of people have a complete breakdown when they cross the threshold from interior to exterior," he says. "They forget they don’t like red. They forget they don’t like floral… Your indoor style should have a direct reference to your outdoor style.”

He suggests taking a look around your home and pulling inspiration from what you already have—whether it’s a color combination or certain material you love. “Whatever it is that makes your heart sing on the inside should be carried right out the door,” he says.

Other essential elements to consider? Lighting. To encourage hanging out in the space as the sun sets, string lights or even a border of solar-powered lights around the lawn can do wonders. An outdoor rug can also help center the space and give you the opportunity to introduce low tables and cushions as seating, Berkus shares. Oh, and pro tip: Make sure to look for washable pieces, so they look good and last longer.

Berkus suggests thinking of your outdoor space as an extension to the interior, too. “You’re not required to use plastic plates and disposable forks,” he says. “Bring your placemats and napkins out. Use a beautiful set of stoneware dishes that are durable." (That way if you don't clean up right after, it won't matter if they're out or get rained on.)
