Outdoor Apparel Brand Inks PFAS-Free Partnership

Outdoor Research, (OR) the Seattle-based outdoor gear and apparel company, has formed a partnership with a leader in PFAS-free water repellent treatments in a move to extend the life of its products and keep them out of landfills.

From September, Nitwax will be OR’s preferred partner for its Durable Water Repellent (DWR) after-purchase care and treatment line. It is a continuation of OR’s commitment to transitioning away from added per- and poly-fluoroalkyls (PFAS) which should be completely phased out with the Spring 2024 product line.

The deal also aligns with OR’s quest for circularity and goal of reducing the environmental impact of their garments and equipment. Nikwax has not used PFAS in its products since the company was launched in London by the hiker who formulated the first product in 1977.

“Circularity and clean chemistry have always been critical components of our business at Nikwax,” said Brian Davidson, president of Nikwax North America, also headquartered in Seattle. “We are thrilled to have found a partner in Outdoor Research with a shared vision of promoting these sustainable practices.”

Both brands are behind efforts to educate consumers on sustainability and how they can contribute by extending the life of their gear and equipment while maximizing its performance. All Nikwax products are water-based, and all bottles and lids are made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic that can be recycled a number of times. Aerosol containers are never used.

Outdoor Research was started in 1981 as a source for high-performance clothing and outdoor gear. The line includes down garments, protective hats, mosquito nets for sleeping bags, sport hijabs and rain gear.

The Nikwax line includes water proofing for boots and leather gear, a special wash for down garments, coatings to restore waterproofing, and products to revitalize horse blankets and pet beds. It has been carbon balanced for its entire history and became an employee owned trust in 2022.
