His family announced the news in a statement on April 19.

Otis Redding III, the son of music legend and soul singer Otis Redding, has died. He was 59.

The news was announced on Wednesday, April 19, by Redding's family, who confirmed via social media that the singer and guitarist died from cancer on Tuesday evening.

"It is with heavy hearts that the family of Otis Redding III confirms that he lost his battle with cancer last evening at Atrium Health Navicent in Macon, Ga. Otis was 59 years old," his sister, Karla Redding-Andrewswrote in a statement on the Facebook page of the Otis Redding Foundation.

"Please keep our family in your prayers at this time and please respect our privacy as we consume this huge loss," the post continued, noting that "arrangements will be announced at a later date."

Redding was only 3 years old when his father, often dubbed the King of Soul, tragically died in a plane crash along with several band members in 1967. The "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" singer was only 26 years old at the time of his death.

Over a decade after the loss of his father, Redding and his brother Dexter would go on to form the funk band The Reddings, which is credited with the hit singles "Remote Control" and "Call The Law," as well as six albums throughout the '80s.

Recording his last album with the band in 1988, Redding went on to be the guitarist for soul singer Eddie Floyd. And during the European tour leg of Floyd's tour, Redding often performed his father's famous songs live.

He also worked with his family's foundation, helping children learn to play music, and served as board president for his local chapter of Meals on Wheels up until his death.
