Oscar Nominations Snub Both Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie for 'Barbie'

The 2024 Academy Award nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, and as always, there were some snubs and surprises. Leonardo DiCaprio, for one, failed to clinch his eighth Oscar nod for Killers of the Flower Moon, and Michael Mann's Ferrari was shut out entirely. However, the biggest news is arguably that Barbie, the most buzzed-about (and highest-grossing) movie of the year, failed to earn nominations for two key categories.

Both Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were passed over for best director and best actress, respectively, when it was Gerwig's candy-colored vision that brought the film to life and Robbie who did the same for the beloved toy doll. However, in a bit of a surprise, America Ferrera—who was ignored by the Golden Globes—did get a best supporting actress nomination. And in typical "Ken" fashion, so did Ryan Gosling for best supporting actor.

All-in-all, Barbie walks away with eight total nominations. In addition to Ferrera and Gosling's nods, it also was nominated for best picture, adapted screenplay, costume design, production design, and two best original songs: "I'm Just Ken" and "What Was I Made For?" Still, given Gerwig's history-making turn as highest-grossing female director, her exclusion feels particularly notable.

Of the film's nine Golden Globe nominations, it ultimately won for the newly-minted Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which celebrates the highest-earning or most viewed films from the previous year, as well as "What Was I Made For?" for best original song.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony will air Sunday, March 10 on ABC at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Jimmy Kimmel will serve as host for the fourth time, following hosting duties in 2023, 2018, and 2017.
