Oscar Nominations 2020: Joker, Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood, and The Irishman Lead the Pack

The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards are in, and as you’ve probably come to expect from the Oscars, there’s plenty to be excited about…and some typically confounding choices and snubs in the mix, too. Joker scored the most nominations, with 11 total nods, including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor. Netflix’s The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood, and Sam Mendes’s 1917 were close behind with ten nominations each. Parasite, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s dark take on capitalism, earned six nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

The announcement of the nominations took place on Monday morning, with Insecure star Issa Rae and John Cho, of Star Trek and Harold & Kumar fame, presenting the list of nominees. They both seemed pretty chipper, considering it was barely past 5 a.m. in Los Angeles.

In the acting categories, the Oscars narrowly avoided a total repeat of the “Oscars So White” controversy from 2015’s awards, although not by much. The only woman of color nominated this year was Harriet star Cynthia Erivo, who's up for Best Actress. The other nominees in that category are Saoirse Ronan for Little Women, Renée Zellweger for Judy, Charlize Theron for Bombshell, and Scarlett Johansson for Marriage Story.

Johansson was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Jojo Rabbit, although Laura Dern is the overwhelming favorite in that category for her performance in Marriage Story.

Antonio Banderas was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Pain and Glory, which is also up for the Best International Feature Award. He’s joined by Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jonathan Pryce. Netflix, which earned more than 20 nominations across a bunch of major categories, also picked up three Best Supporting Actor nominations, as The Two Popes’ Anthony Hopkins and both Al Pacino's and Joe Pesci’s The Irishman performances got nods. Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt round out that category.

Parasite is up for six awards, including Best Picture, Best International Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. It's only the eleventh foreign-language film up for the top prize, and the sixth to be nominated in both Best Picture and Best International Film categories.

There were some notable snubs. Hustlers was totally shut out, meaning that GQ's December cover star Jennifer Lopez probably won’t even be in attendance at the Oscars, which is a drag. The Farewell also didn’t receive a single nomination, even though Awkwafina won big at the Golden Globes last week. Uncut Gems also got zilch. Neither Greta Gerwig nor any other female director was nominated for Best Director, making it an all-male category yet again. But, you know, congrats to the director of The Hangover Part III!

The 2020 Oscars will be held on February 9 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern, and will be airing on ABC. As with last year’s Oscars, there isn’t going to be a host.
