Oscars 2018: The Shape of Water leads with 13 nominations, Gary Oldman in running for Best Actor
The nominees for the 90th Academy Awards have been announced today, with fantasy romance The Shape of Water nominated in 13 categories, and Winston Churchill biopic Darkest Hour appearing in seven. Martin McDonagh's black comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – a major winner at the Golden Globes earlier this month – has picked up six nominations.
The announcement, made in a live broadcast from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at the Academy's Beverley Hills headquarters, also included a nod for Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood, for his work on the score of period drama Phantom Thread.
Phantom Thread's star, Daniel Day-Lewis – who recently announced his retirement from acting – earned a Best Actor nomination for what may prove to be his final role.

Christopher Plummer has been nominated for Supporting Actor Oscar, after replacing Kevin Spacey in All the Money in the World, in a last-minute reshoot.
Introducing the event, John Bailey, president of the Motion Picture Academy, praised 2017 as a "remarkable year for the movies". The nominations were announced by actress Tiffany Haddish, recently seen in the hit comedy Girls Trip, and Planet of the Apes star Andy Serkis.
"I gotta see this Dunkirk, it sounds like a lot of people like it!" quipped Haddish, as Christopher Nolan's war drama swept the board in technical nominations.
Rachel Morrison has become the first female filmmaker ever to be nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar, for her work on Mudbound, a period drama released on Netflix.
The winners will be announced on March 4 in an award ceremony at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre, hosted by American comedian Jimmy Kimmel. Former hosts have included Ellen DeGeneres, Bob Hope and Whoopi Goldberg.
Last year, the ceremony was broadcast live in the UK by Sky Cinema, though no broadcast details for this year have yet been confirmed.
