ELLE Decor A-Listers Bill Brockschmidt and Courtney Coleman are best known for their design projects for the literary elite—Jon and Keith Meacham’s Nashville home and agent extraordinaire Lynn Nesbit’s New York apartment immediately come to mind. Now they are embarking on their newest project: planting a flag in the Big Easy.

Brockschmidt & Coleman’s new space, opening today, is located in a double shotgun house in the historic Garden District of New Orleans. The building includes a boutique called Sud, which will feature a curated selection of antiques, art, and contemporary crafts inspired by the Mezzogiorno region of Italy, where Brockschmidt and his husband and store co-owner Richard Dragisic have a home. The store is filled with gorgeous ceramics made by the Piscitello family—who have been in operation for 330 years—and hand-painted plates created by the architect Benedetto Fasciana, among other hard-to-find goods from Sicily.

Both designers, born and educated in the South, are looking forward to getting back to their roots. “Designing down here, there is even more of an appetite for what we love to do, like researching heritage and tradition,” Brockschmidt tells ED.

For designers whose work is steeped in historical references, it is somewhat of a homecoming to be in a city where history is everywhere you look.
