Magic F Jonathan Isaac somehow sprained his ankle at a team jersey unveiling
Jonathan Isaac wasn’t on the floor with the Orlando Magic for their game against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night while dealing with a sprained ankle.
Isaac, however, didn’t injure his ankle during practice, a team workout or in a game — as one would normally assume.
Instead, he sprained his ankle during the Magic’s event to unveil their new “City Edition” uniforms on Thursday night.

“It was just being on the court, messing around and shooting and stuff and I got a little tweak,” Isaac said, via the Magic. “I thought it was OK. I went home and put on a brace and then I woke up and went through shootaround and didn’t feel 100 percent, so I got with the training staff and they decided about what we wanted to do moving forward.”
While the injury sounds fairly minor, the circumstances are certainly unusual. After all, there isn’t much athletic activity that normally happens at these types of events. It’s usually a pretty stationary public event with almost no risk involved at all. Isaac said his shoes were untied too, “because of the lighthearted nature of the appearance.”
Isaac has started in every game for the Magic so far this season, averaging 12.1 points and 6.5 rebounds in nearly 31 minutes per game. The 22-year-old is in his third season in the league, after the Magic selected him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 draft. Al-Farouq Aminu took his place in the starting lineup on Friday at the Amway Center.
Despite his absence, however, the Magic still pulled off a 111-109 win against the Spurs, their third win in four games. Evan Fournier led Orlando with 26 points on the night, shooting 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. Terrance Ross added 20 points off the bench, and Aaron Gordon finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
The Magic did not provide a timeline for his return, only saying his status depends on how physical therapy goes in the coming days.
“Look, it can happen,” Orlando coach Steve Clifford said, via the Magic. “When you’re a coach, you laugh when somebody says, ‘You’re up 12 with a minute left and take [a player] out because somebody could get hurt.’ Somebody could get hurt — and I mean this and not joking — they could get hurt walking down the hallway there.
“It happens all the time. It’s unfortunate and that’s why we’re fortunate to have good depth.”
