Orion Art Gallery to host open house at new site Saturday

May 16—WATERTOWN — Orion Art Gallery and Studio will host a grand reopening open house from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at its new location at 327 Mullin St.

Artists and associates at the gallery have spent the early spring relocating it from State Route 12 in Alexandria Bay to its new location in the former Mullin Street offices of Bernier & Carr Architects.

Featuring the artworks and ceramic works of 15 local and regional artists, Orion Art Gallery & Studio was formed in 2019 by managing partner artists William Christopherson, Watertown, Suzan McDermott of Gouverneur and Garrett McCarthy of Henderson Harbor.

The new location allows expanded display space for artists and improved studio facilities of Oswego State University adjunct art instructor Kristy Askins Hoover of Watertown. She will be offering classes in ceramic wheel throwing and maintains her kiln at the gallery.

The art on display represent a wide diversity of themes, styles and mediums. Gallery rooms and hallways are lined with pottery, colorful landscape paintings, sculptures of the human form, jewelry and more which visitors can stop by to admire or purchase.

Other displaying artists are Kat Mereand, Watertown; Alice Elisabeth Waite, Watertown; Melissa Cocomello, Syracuse; Stephen Yaussi, Henderson Harbor; R.D. White & Sara White, Sackets Harbor; Wendy Matthews, Clayton; Lateasha Jacobs, Clayton; Destiny Pearline, Watertown, and selected works of the late metal sculptor Will Salisbury.

Saturday's grand reopening open house will feature live music by local vocalist Maggie Mintz from 1 to 5 p.m. and light hors d'oeuvres and beverages. There is no fee to visit the gallery.

The gallery is open year-round with monthly featured exhibits. It will also be hosting the annual Jefferson County/1000 Islands Plein Air Artists competition and Summer Arts festival in August.
